The act of storytelling is shared by every culture as an expression of being; the complexities that make us, as humans, dimensional. My artwork illustrates a series of stories - of events that aim to present the beautiful tragedy of the human condition, with all its facets. The stories that act as a foundation are separate, but intertwined by a common thread. Presage, the fictional narrative and focus of my current body of work, follows the path of a character named Lee, who, like the audience, watches his steps from an outside perspective. He finds a series of doors; pathways to different places, times, and realities. He finds a child who has no home, who acts as a guide through fabricated, dream-like worlds. The underlying goal of my artwork is to give weight to such fiction, and to depict emotions experienced when encountering the unknown. The ambiguous nature of the content within these mysterious places are expressed in my paintings by use of color and shadow, conveying emotions through the creation of atmosphere.

This illustrative approach runs throughout my work. There is also an element of disbelief within the painted works, as there is something unnatural within each composition used to convey a sense of disorientation, of distortion. Memory is unreliable, as is the narrator, and the walls become distorted with the very act of reconstruction. The environments are saturated and incomplete, brushstrokes used as indicators of what may have been, or could be. The use of light illuminates the dark - but only just. There are things that are hidden, that are waiting in the dark. This sort of fear, this sense of dread is a retelling of a very human emotion, a very human state of being. My artwork captures and displays a constructed world within a world, composed with memories of light and unfinished thoughts.

L. Sanchez is an artist, writer, and filmmaker based in Sacramento, California. Working predominantly in acrylic paint and watercolor, Sanchez’s art utilizes colored light and dry brushstroke techniques to create dark, expressive, and fantastical "passages" that invite the viewer into a personal, fictional narrative. This immersive quality allows each piece to unfold as a visual exploration of imagination.

With an M.A. from the University of Northern Colorado, Sanchez has been featured in exhibitions including the Southard Showcase of the Arts (2015) and Transcending Chords, a large-scale collaborative installation with the Philharmonic Orchestra that became part of the Union Colony Civic Center’s permanent collection. Sanchez’s mural Tabula Rasa (2016) in Greeley’s Art Alley and subsequent exhibitions in Fort Collins and Denver reflect an ongoing commitment to large-scale work. In addition to their creative practice, Sanchez has taught 2D design foundations and is currently working on a new body of work that continues to push the boundaries of visual storytelling.
